Athletic Insurance
Roane State Community College provides secondary, supplemental athletic accident insurance for the benefit of our student-athletes. The coverage is provided by BMI Benefits, and is offered on an “excess” basis only. Under the terms of the policy, this coverage is considered to be excess to all other valid and collectible medical insurance policies. The BMI Benefits policy has a $1,500.00 deductible per student-athlete, per injury. The deductible is a coordinating/disappearing deductible, which means it can be met or satisfied by primary insurance payments. All claims must be filed with the student-athlete’s primary insurance company prior to being submitted through RSCC’s BMI Benefits policy.
In the event that your son/daughter is injured while participating in an NJCAA sanctioned sport, it is important for us to know about any medical coverage you may have to avoid unnecessary delays in claim processing. Please be aware that the person responsible for the primary insurance plan, is also responsible to insure the claim is filed properly with your primary health insurance company. Please allow time for the claims process to work, especially in cases where there are more than one insurance carrier involved. When you receive an itemized bill (HCFA 1500-physicians billing or UB04/UB92-hospital/medical facility billing), insure that it contains the following information: 1. Provider’s name, 2. Provider’s address, 3. Tax ID number, 4. Date(s) of Service, 5. Type of Service(s) Rendered, and 6. The Fee for Each Procedure. Additionally, a Primary Explanation of Benefits (EOB) is required documentation. The EOB is a statement from your primary insurance company that outlines what charges will be covered, and what the patient responsibility might be. Please forward said documents to: RSCC, Attn: Amberlee Zeller, Athletics Assistant, 276 Patton Lane, Harriman, TN 37748-5011. You may also scan the required documents and email to: zellera@roanestate.edu.
Please feel free to contact Amberlee Zeller with any questions you may have regarding this process, via email or office phone (865) 882-4581.
